Céline Dion – Ashes
A joke song. ‘Song’ not the operative word. The problem is this just shows plainly the sort of empty pomp that is Céline Dion’s only mode. Deadpool choreography is of course funny, but this spoof is identical to the dross Céline’s released with a straight face.
Snow Patrol – What If This Is All The Love You Ever Get?
No prizes for innovation being won here. Sad pianos and little else. At least, at first sight. Gary Lightbody it seems is an excellent balladeer, and pushing his voice to the fore is something of a progression for the band. Intimate over anthemic, range over feeling, basic but raw.
Christina Aguilera – Accelerate ft. Ty Dolla $ign, 2 Chainz
What happens when Christina imitates a Big Sean flow? A bit of a mess, really. This isn’t exactly a failure. There’s something to be said for the brittle electropop beat, 808 throbs and odd phrasing. However it is hard to recommend to anyone besides hardcore Aguilera heads, who these days are thin on the ground.
Florence + The Machine – Hunger
More gospel pop. Soulful sure, but samey. There is little doubting Florence’s talent but there is some doubting her creative range at this point. Given her experimentation on her last LP it’s a shame to see a retreat to type. However this is a style which she knows exceptionally well.
