The latest from Little Monarch is as zesty as the title suggests – and goes down like a cool long drink on a hot dry day.
‘Tangerine’ is essentially a 90s alt-rock tune, with a twist. It carries a passing resemblance to ‘Semi-Charmed Life’ by Third Eye Blind, and shares a love of the summer sun. However a mock-epic intro, that sounds like the opening cinematic from some forgotten 80s shareware, dispels any chance of this fitting to type.
Setting ‘Tangerine’ apart is its tropical chorus – an unexpected and glorious evocation of calypso. The riff is dry and funky, the harmonies sugar sweet and the beat loose and airy. The grandiose bridge, which ushers in icy keys in a sweep of ELO majesty, is the cherry on the cake.
Imagine Sheryl Crow’s ‘Everyday Is a Winding Road’ blasted through the sub-woofer of a Roswell saucer – and you’re nearly there. ‘Tangerine’ is funky, tangy and catchy as hell.
