‘No Tears Left To Cry’ is the most ambitious single Ariana Grande has released, and while it doesn’t have the anthemic thwack of Dangerous Woman, it suggests an unexpected new direction.
Over an acid jazz beat layers of synths and a gentle bass groove make for a song that is less focussed on the dancefloor. ‘No Tears Left To Cry’ is expressive in a way her prior singles have been more focused on audience engagement. This isn’t really a banger, but it does allow Grande to explore a sound with greater emphasis on personality – and suggests that the upcoming LP may be more of a statement.
The reference to Manchester seals the deal. All hail Queen Ari.
